There are so much gas consumption topics on the Forester forum I think people did not do enough research before buying one.

To whomever may want to buy a new Subaru Forester or other gas SUV, here are some points:

  • the two liter engine is great if you drive like a granny. slow on the gas, change gears fast, slow acceleration, slow, slow, slow. this is the only way you can achieve the manual specified MPG.
  • moving 1.5 tons of car is not great on gas if you have the 2 liter engine. Subaru uses them for a number of reasons, one of them being a small car maker and cannot afford R&D on a variety of engines, other being tax purposes. if you worry about the MPG, get the 2 liter diesel, I testdrive a 2 liter Kia Sportage and got about 25 MPG in the city.
  • that beautiful symetrical AWD that everybody likes takes up a lot of gas, too.

I get 14 in the city and 21 on the road on my 06 XT. I drive hard and fast.
