Every couple of months people are finding out that Romania has one of the fastest internet connections on the planet. Us, a small and poor country, the fastest internet? How is that possible?

Well, it’s a numbers game. Internet in Romania is generally found in the cities, where it’s easy to put a router in a box and then spread UTP cable to a whole street or a whole block. And i know this because i have done this and almost all the internet in Romania was like this 5 years ago: UTP cables eveywhere. Fiber optics cable on poles.

Outside cities, things are more complicated. Usually the internet is bought by smaller companies with the same technique: put a fiber optics router someplace and then spread by UTP cable. That is done in rich villages and outside crowded urban areas. Poor and mid-income villages have no internet at all or rely on 3G modems.
