Little lies

30 July 2010

“How to Web” is a new conference taking place in Bucharest sometime soon. Looking at the team in charge of the event, i couldn’t help notice some of the little lies. For example, Raluca Georgescu created “Raluk.ro, one of the most important local entertainment websites”. I never heard of it until yesterday, and i spend […]

VAT increase, prices go up, still no solutions

3 July 2010

This is basically what is going on in Romania right now. Nobody knows what to do, so they raised the VAT with 5% (now it’s 24), because this measure will, of course, bring more money to the state budget. But it won’t. What will do is make us poorer. I am still amazed that nobody […]

Will we ever learn?

9 May 2010

Romania is in the middle of a political and economic crisis. We will get over it, one way or the other, in the next few years. The problem is: will we learn anything from it? My guess is not. So capitalism fails again.

Healthcare for everyone?

31 January 2010

America is debating the healthcare reform just about now. To the best of my knowledge, they do not have any healthcare coverage at all, and they must look into the private sector if the want to be assured. Of course, this is extra. That is not good. At the opposite side is Romania. We have […]

Traian Basescu, president of Romania

7 December 2009

He granted me a 30-minute interview (in Romanian). He is not that much into social media, but he won the 2004 elections being very cool and loose, as opposed to an uptight Adrian Năstase, his opponent. I am not the first blogger to interview him, but i am the first that got to him by […]

can’t be proud

14 July 2009

50 years of communism had impregnated deep in the conscience of Romanians. For example, bragging is not something we like. I cannot say on my blog I am doing well, because people will take that as an insult. What do you mean you are doing well? That is outrageous! I am not doing well! You […]

back home

1 June 2009

Sort of. After a short vacation in Venice, i am in Oradea, preparing for TIFF (Transylvania International Film Festival). Romania hasn’t change much, but i like Transylvania better than Muntenia, people are more relaxed and a few hundred years of Austrian occupation shows.

little hill cabin

7 April 2009

Yesterday, while I was driving from Cluj to Debrecen, I spotted a little cabin, somehow resembling the one in the picture on the right, in a little hill village. Some windows, a little lawn, a big orchard in the back of the house. There was a banner on the cabin, saying “for rent/for sale”. I […]

responsibility for our kids

9 January 2009

I think the American higher education system is well-thought. With college taxes, i mean. You have two choices to achieve higher learning: either you are good and receive a scholarship, either your parents save some money. We are not equal. Some are born with chances, others have to fight for them. And, if your parents […]
