Now this is some quality upgrades…

31 October 2020

Gmail changed the favicon. Yeap. That was the only thing on their bucket list for 2020. Not deleting accounts that are flagged for sending spam. Not fixing the buggy “send and archive” option. Neah. Those are for losers. Let’s change the icon to a horrible one. Meanwhile, disable direct write and close tab on double […]

Modern usability design: GMail

26 December 2018

The new version of Gmail brought a few design choices and i can’t help wondering how high was the whole team that did them. One of the changes is “you can’t choose between buttons and labels anymore, gotta pick buttons or labels”. No logic whatsoever. None. But the weirdest is this one: My attention is […]

Why Facebook wants to host the news

26 March 2015

NYT reports. There are two explanations, both of them simple as pie: As I have said before, people need stuff to consume, that is why all sorts of people buy all kinds of newspapers, in an attempt to keep them afloat. All of them remember the time the internet was dry of information: no Wikipedia, […]

Google is not a charity, indeed…

22 March 2015

Matt Rosof explains why Google does a lot of stuffing of their own products in their search Regardless of whether Google faces new charges, the thing to keep in mind is that Google is a for-profit company. Its products have to be good, otherwise nobody will use them. But they also serve the larger business […]

Feedly and Netvibes realize how complicated Reader was

27 June 2013

I’ve been using both of them. Both suck mildly. Netvibes updates slowly and displays even slower. Feedly has that stupid idea of displaying a big story, even if I selected magazine view. And displays again read items. And this comes from lack of servers.

What does “direct access” mean

9 June 2013

You’ve read all the incoherent babble about PRISM and how the American Government has access to data from Google, Yahoo, Facebook and others. Of course, everybody denies it, saying they do not provide direct access to their servers. Of course. What good would do to the government if they had root on 10, 100, 100.000 […]

PC – bleak future

15 April 2013

There are three important things to note in the past few days. Erich Schmidt from Google saying that by 2020 every human on the planet will be online. Sure, this is not going to happen, and people cited lack of water or electricity, but he is on to something: it is easier to be online […]

How long before FeedBurner shuts down? Or Gmail?

26 March 2013

Google Reader is shutting down, citing low usage. I understand, RSS has never been popular thing. But rather than ask 50$/year for a service a lot of people were using and be glad to pay that money, Google is shutting it down. FeedBurner is next, citing same RSS is dead thing. And then maybe Gmail.

Google should move the money from doodles to search quality

27 May 2012

Another search engine algorithm update, called “Penguin”, hit the web a few days ago. Webmasters are screaming and complaining their positions were lost. Some of them are asking if this is Google’s way of saying SEO is dead. It is, but… Search Engine Optimisation is a very unfortunate term. Website Optimisation sounds much better, as […]
